Aikido

Aikido is a relatively new japanese martial art with roots in old samurai tradition. Movement patterns and techniques are taken from jujutsu and sword- and spearfighting to create a system of combat that allows the practitioner to neutralise one or more opponents. The aikido practitioner will strive to achieve a level of technique that allows for the possibility to inflict no unnecessary damage to the attacker.

The aikido techniques are in principle based on circular motion and is more about total body control than physical strenght and size. The techniques aim to incapacitate the opponent by throwing or locking. Aikido does not emphasise physical strength, rather to exploit the opponents momentum and intention (ki) for your defense.

Aikido is trained in total cooperation to allow the practitioners to become familiar with the techniques in a safe and sensible manner. Speed and level is adapted to the practitioners personal ability.
